Each team: Barcelona s three consecutive away games at the start of the new season are not an isolated case, Real Madrid s approach was the same when they were renovating at home
Recently, "Everything" talked about Barcelona's three consecutive away schedule this season due to the renovation of the Camp Nou Stadium. They said that Real Madrid also adopted the same approach when the renovation of the Bernabeu Stadium.
The slightest disturbance of Barcelona seems to cause an uproar, and fans and media are far more sensitive to this team than other teams. After three consecutive away games, Barcelona will finally face Valencia at home, but the match will be held at the John Cruyff Stadium, as the new Camp Nou has not yet received final permission and Montwhich Stadium is unavailable for the concert.
These two situations have sparked widespread criticism from fans of other La Liga teams on social media, and the choice to play at the John Cruyff Stadium was due to an emergency because the regular stadium was unavailable. But Barcelona is also questioned for the first three away games for two consecutive seasons. The usual reason is that by playing away first, the second round will be "easier" because there will be more home games.
In fact, in the second half of the season, they will play 11 of their 19 games at home. This approach is not unique to Barcelona, and such arrangements are common when the first team is undergoing renovations or encountering other problems as it can buy time for engineering without affecting the game. Barcelona adopted this strategy early in the 2024/25 season and early this season to speed up construction progress at Camp Nou.
Real Madrid have also taken advantage of this "preferential treatment". They played three consecutive away games at the start of the 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons to have more time to transform the Bernabeu stadium. Even during the epidemic, they used the Bardebebas Stadium without spectators to accelerate the renovation. For example, in the 2020/21 season, they played at the Stadium de Distefano throughout the season and started with two away games in the league.
From 2021 to 2024, Real Madrid started their season with three consecutive away games every year. However, these decisions have not attracted much attention during these seasons. For example, in 2022, due to the impact of the Qatar World Cup and the Saudi Arabian Super Cup, Real Madrid did not play at the Bernabeu for 78 consecutive days, which greatly promoted the progress of the stadium's engineering.
Ultimately, the controversy surrounding these schedule adjustments did not show any competitive advantage. Teams like Real Madrid have adopted similar solutions, but have not received much attention. Both clubs need time to complete their projects, and La Liga gives them the convenience they need.
