Tebas: EU Commissioner is more naive than my child, UEFA will not negotiate or change

Recently, La Liga President Tebas criticized the EU Sports Analysis Commissioner for his naive view of football at the annual meeting of the Union of European Football Clubs (UEC). The UEC was established in 2023 to protect the interests of small and medium-sized clubs.

Tebas said: "I have no doubt about the good intentions of the EU Commissioner for Analysis, but he is more naive than the teenagers in my family." Prior to this, the 36-year-old EU Sports Analyst Commissioner Micallef from Malta generally supported the UEC's position at the same meeting, but did not announce specific measures to intervene in European football competitions dominated by UEFA.

Tebas continued: "The threat of the European Super League still exists. The EU cannot only regulate football, but also regulate the entire sports industry." He also mentioned that basketball, Europe's second largest sport, is planning a similar event to the Super League, and criticized the NBA's plan to host a competition in Europe that includes 12 fixed teams and 4 teams promoted from domestic leagues.

Tebas claimed that the people promoting this basketball game are those who lead the Super League, which goes against the European sports model. He accused the EU commissioner of failing to raise the issue on social media and instead criticizing La Liga's event in the United States.

Not long ago, the European Commissioner sparked a controversy when he publicly opposed La Liga's planned Villarreal vs. Barcelona match in Miami. Tebas said on Tuesday that without reforms to football's governance model, the sport would be doomed.

Tebas has warned that domestic leagues are being distorted as more European competitions generate more revenue. He stressed the need to reform the distribution of television rights and give smaller clubs more power or compensate them for their efforts to develop players. Otherwise, football will move toward "collective suicide."

Tebas also called for no illusions about reaching an agreement with UEFA. He said: "UEFA will not negotiate, don't expect them to sit down and talk. We have recognized this for many years. They will not change, and neither will FIFA. We must be clear about this. , otherwise we will reach the end of the movie."

He added that it is important to apply pressure at this critical moment, because "at the end of this movie, it will be more difficult to change everything." He emphasized that opening up the competition system is crucial to maintain the enthusiasm of fans. "We must at least keep the spark alive."
